More than anything, Under the Unders is a way to celebrate being a woman myself and the existence of all the other women in the world. Being a woman may be hard sometimes, but by feeling good with ourselves is an important step to achieving place in this society ruled by men. Some ladies, through history, became icons because they were brave and talented enough to break these social barriers of gender, and ended up being famous for it.
Blackbird Underpinnings is launching their debut line. The aim of it is to “celebrate the unique beauty in every woman by promoting self‐expression and authenticity.”, according to designer and co‐founder Marin Camille Hood. When I found out about it, I got so excited! The world definitely need more pieces celebrating the beauty in our bodies, the vintage-inspired ones made by Blackbird were a great contribution.
The MAVEN collection is inspired by five iconic women: Édit Piaf, Anaïs Nin, Josephine Baker, Marlene Dietrich and Coco Chanel. Just like those women, the undergarments represent confidence, creativity, and authenticity as key elements, and are very, very beautiful!
However, the collection may not be completed without our help. As many other small lingerie brands, Blackbird Underpinnings have to struggle with huge costs of production and other things related to designing and selling. So, for the collection to be released, they have started a Kickstarter campaign, offering lots of rewards for the ones who are willing to contribute. Some of those are pieces from the new collection: the Édit crushed velvet knickers, the Anaïs silk charmeuse bralette, the Josephine silk charmeuse bloomers, the Marlene silk charmeuse camisole and my favorite: the Coco silk charmeuse romper. All in classic colors and luxurious fabrics, as you can see in the pictures.
In addition to all of this, I got very happy to see the pictures because they feature such beautiful and diverse models! It’s really a celebration to the women’s body, with great photography and #diversityinlingerie. I am really hoping to see more of Blackbird from now on, waiting for them to fill me with even more joy. Their debut collection is already one of the best things in the lingerie world now -in my humble opinion, of course!- because of the reasons stated above.
I’ve engaged in a new pattern cutting and sewing course, this time about corselettes and corsets. Although these pieces are very different from bras, they are by no means easier to make. I have a nice tutor and she helps me through every step of the process. I’ve only made one corselette until now (she told me we could not call that a corset because of some differences on the sewing process, and the boning could be made in plastic, but I decided to do it in steel).
For my first piece, I wanted something very classical, so I bought all the materials to do a black denim underbust!
After lots of cutting, understanding aspects of the pattern, sewing together, finding out I did something wrong, cutting the stitches, sewing again and lots of other small parts of the process, I could visualize my corselette coming together. The best part of designing or sewing, in my opinion, is the time we get excited to see the piece ready.
So, it finally turned out to be something very, very beautiful!
My waist is usually 63cm and I turned it into about 58cm. It’s a bit too much for someone not used to waist reductions, but I really like it! I am going to wear to a party this weekend, with a beautiful black dress, I am so excited! I really loved to share those pictures with you, so you can all see how my process on making lingerie items is going!
I am already designing my new underbust one. It’s gonna be a bit different this tim,e but you will have to wait a bit more to see how it goes!
Autumn and Spring are different seasons. Usually, in Autumn people are experiencing the cold weather starting to come, and in Spring, the hot weather coming with the sun. When children, we learn the difference between yellow leaves falling, pumpkins and cozy sweaters, and bright colors, flowers growing and nice printed dresses.
But I live in a place where the weather does not get colder than 13C (around 55F) and can go up to 42C in January (that would be more than 100F). So, basically, since we usually have weather around 20~30C, Fall and Spring have… quite the same weather. Of course, when it gets closer to Winter or to Summer, we can spot the difference, but it’s not much.
I decided to thin about nightwear, since I can’t decide if I want to be in warm pijamas or in sexy camisoles. But hey – it’s my lingerie blog, I can just pretend I afford everything of my wishlist and tell you all the night and loungewear I would like to have on my body in this middle seasons.
Have I told you before that Belle de Nuit is my new favorite Fleur of England collection? I know I did, but I could tell you all over again, because it really is so much beauty that I find hard to deal with it. Anyway, I will find a way to get this silk babydoll, I really am. It would fit every season i could possibly imagine and it’s my ultimate desire in nightwear right now.
This robe by Dottie’s Delights is another item I’ve wanted for a long time, now. It would definitely make me warm enough to walk around the house in style, write in style, eat midnight snacks in style… ok, you got the idea. I just think about how many items I could combine this with… so many beautiful things…
Shorts are good option for someone who -like me- loves to sleep wrapped in blankets. This one, by Gold Hawk, is so lovely and seems super comfortable. I can feel how much my body wants this amount of nice fabric in it… it’s so adorable! And the colors are very close to a Fall color pallet, which would be nice all year round!
Luxury. So much luxury. This could be combined with every black thing in my wardrobe, or red, or just… wore alone. It’s available in Frou Frou Fashionista and I want one, really do! Not exactly the kind of thing I wear on an everyday basis, but could I resist it?
It’s October! And with October, besides my college works (which is the main reason I’ve been quite away), comes breast cancer awareness. It’s such in important subject and I am glad the lingerie industry takes it’s time and offers support to those who need or may need.
So I decided to show you some lingerie brands that are making a good job into donating and supporting awareness and research, showing that if we all take little steps, we are able to help greater causes and other women! And you can always watch this boobcheck video to help you recognize any strange symptom, helping you save your life! So here comes some pinks, following the month’s theme:
Independent designers make me happy, but when they give up a little of their time and money to the cause, it makes me even happier! Angela Friedman does a great job in making lingerie and corsetry, and I’ve told to myself many times that I will buy something from her whenever I get to New York (and maybe meet her too – because I really love meeting people interested in lingerie!). She is donating 15% of all her profit to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and have some lovely pink items that would look lovely in any lingerie collection!
Esty, another independent designer, has some of my favorite chokers and harnesses, I’ve talked about it before. And she is donating £5 of all the sales from her Pink Skull Choker Bra Strap (which costs only £10, 99) to Breakthrough Breast Cancer foundation! Besides, Halloween is just around the corner, and everybody knows that a nice, long black dress would fit this choker perfectly! I love how she was able to join both dates to create something beautiful and useful!
Boux Avenue is giving £1 to Breast Cancer Care in every pink item purchased! This gives lots of options to choose from, in lots of pink tones in various products on the store. You can find a list of the pink lingerie and sleepwear available on the website, and be ready to shop a lot!
OPI Nail Polish
I know, I know, it’s not lingerie. But this is breast cancer awareness month, and if it’s related to boobs and health, I guess it has a place in my blog. OPI launched this cute set that I would really love to have, and £2 of each set will be donated to Look Good… Feel Better institution. Great time to put some pink on your nails! The set, with 2 polishes with this cute pink ribbon cap and some details like crystals to glue on your nails, is available at Nail Polish Direct website.
So, just be sure to check your breasts, tell your friends and family and, if you are shopping pink, always be sure that the money will be donated to a certain company! Check before you spend! I hope we can, by these little steps, save lots of women and prevent other women to get breast cancer!
I bet you all heard of it, at least all my friends did. The first time I saw half of the videoclip, I got caught by some words I’ve read about how women were portrayed and ended up searching for bad things to talk about. I was, in fact, pretty sleepy and sad that a huge production like this one would be full of disrespect to women and oversexualized pictures.
However, I ended up reading something else, in which I was told that it was all about bdsm and the images were just sexual, not exactly disrespectful, and I could look at it in a different bias. I liked the idea of looking at it twice, and I actually kinda like the song… I got caught up by the rhythm… ok, ok, I can say I like it.
Pop culture is full of sexualization, specially when it comes to women. No wonder the “Work Bitch” video would have this kind of image, plus some whips, chains and even a radio used as a gag (I find it quite a surprising but amazing way for advertisement). Since the release -and the success- of 50 Shades of Grey, we’ve been aware of the popularization of sadomasochism, and although I could spot a lot of bad points of the book (I actually haven’t read it, but heard lots of friends talking about it and read tons of texts about it), I see no reason why this would be negative. In my opinion, the more we are aware that people have fetishes and it’s ok, as long as it’s consensual, of course, the more we get close to a naturalization of sexual aspects. Not to banalize them, but to stop thinking about them as harmful and dirty.
Instead of looking at the dominated side, now, I’m looking into the dominative – which is Britney’s role. She is a woman, she is strong and she wears more great lingerie than I would ever dream to have in my wardrobe. She just strolls around in dance clubs in Bordelle, she have slaves which wear Zana Bayne products. She is so powerful that she can explode Hopeless garments and not even feel sorry about it! Oh, I envy you, Britney.
Using the word Bitch can be considered to be a bad thing. It really is, sometimes, but when I am on my better days, it means, when I feel like we must keep fighting to be able to express our sexuality in a free way, I think this word can be a way of empowerment, in a “Slut Walk” way. If I could change one thing, it would be the way society thinks of women and sex, not the images on the videoclip. Some may not want to be so exposed when it comes to their intimate desires or imagination, and that’s completely understandable. But diversity is what moves our world, it’s what makes it colorful, and it’s fine if one wants to state it’s sexuality. It’s ok to feel powerful by liking fetish-styled images and clothing, it’s ok not to like this aesthetic. That is exactly what sexually free means!
And if being a powerful woman who is not afraid to show that she likes sex and has no problem when her image is related to it is being a bitch… I better work, bitch.
This post is the first one that comes double. Trying to, at the same time, reach my brazilian visitors and make brazilian brands reach international visitors, this post was originally written in portuguese and then translated to english. All of that was done by me, so that I can add notes in concepts that some readers outside Brazil may not understand. I hope this kind of post works, at least for now. It would be lovely to find out your opinion on it!
Recently, I discovered a new brazilian lingerie brand (via Juliana, that has the brazilian lingerie blog Tudo de Lingerie) – and I fell completely in love with it’s style! The brand, Água Fresca (it means fresh water in portuguese) just presented their new collection, called Singeleza.
The SS14 collection (just a reminder – we just entered spring, here!) takes it’s appearance from the city of Sabará, in the state of Minas Gerais, where Turkish immigrants brought the tradition of the characteristic lace produced there (with techniques similar to fishing nets). In the 25 years anniversary of the brand, the finesse of this lace, usually called Singeleza, was the inspiration to the beautiful pieces, as well as the expertise of the artisan producers and the cultural importance of it all.
So, it was more than expected that lace would have the leading role on the garments, and it really happens – in a delicate and lovely way, combining different types of lace with fine fabrics such as organza, voil, tulle, along with colors that range from romantic pastels to dark blue and green. Some prints are present, too, specially one made specially for the collection by the designer Cris Girollet.
Unfortunately, just as many other cultural aspects of small villages, the laces produced at Sabará may be facing an end. The lack of interest of the youngsters to learn the art that once was passed through generations is the reason. However, the Crafts Center of Minas Gerais is trying to stimulate new artisans (this activity is commonly practiced by women, in this region) to learn the techniques and produce the lace.
I got positively impressed by the images and the teaser. I am a lace lover, and the pieces caught my attention, along with their delicate details. For the ones who wish to know more about the brand, just access their website (it’s in portuguese, though).
Karolina Laskoska is launching her new collection, the one she designed and produced with the help of the indiegogo campaign. Her lookbook is ready and she shared with us the beautiful images of her pieces.
This collection is split in two. With couture French lace with the elastics -a signature of her brand-, the first half of it comes in black and ivory, with different styles and new things. The elastics give an edgy feeling, but the delicate lace, along with bows all over the garments, makes it delicate and suitable even for the most classically feminine woman.
The second part of the collection has another focus: upcycling. The handpicked kimono silks, making unique deisngs in modern inspired silhouettes. Each piece is different form the other and it features mini knickers, high-waisted briefs, waspies and lovely nipple pasties with Swarovski crystals.
I really loved the images and how she adapted the new fabrics in her style! Her work always impresses me, in quality and style. The old designs are available on her website, in the new Classics section. All her pieces are available there, too, to order.
